The Super Bowl, which will air Feb 3rd, draws the year’s largest TV audience. Last year’s game set a new record for the most-viewed TV program in history, drawing 111.3 million viewers across the U.S. and tens of millions more around the world.
The massive, real-time audience gives brand marketers unparalleled opportunity to reach a broad cross-section of the U.S. population simultaneously, a rare opportunity in light of media fragmentation. Furthermore, a significant part of that audience will tune in for the commercials — in some cases as much as for the game itself. An appealing venue for brand marketers? Indeed.

I’ve just been watching Stefan Sagmeister’s Ted Talk on The Power of Time off, thanks to the lovely Julia from the NHS Institute who sent it to me. Every seven years, designer Stefan Sagmeister closes his New York studio for a yearlong sabbatical to rejuvenate and refresh their creative outlook. He explains the often overlooked value of time off, which I’m wondering if you can or can’t draw parallels with when you are on maternity leave?

Game Salute has announced that it will be producing a series of board games based on The Princess Bride. Actually, if I understand correctly, what they’re talking about is a set of minigames, each based on a particular scene in the story, but all published in a single box.
While several of the games are already under development, Game Salute is also open to submissions for additional scenes. And the company’s license covers all types of games, so there could be a The Princess Bride roleplaying game down the road.

“What’s the best way to get mom to slow down for a bit? Sit on her lap and purr, she’ll sit there all day. But first you have to get her attention.” Cookie makes a statement by balancing herself on top of my hat and jacket draped on the back of my desk chair. She knows I wouldn’t go anywhere without my hat.
This is Cookie on January 31, 2011, determined to stop me from leaving the house again by balancing on top of my coat and beret which I’d laid on the back of my desk chair, one of her all-time favorite perches.
Okay, so I was out a lot that week, much more than normal, and I was a little preoccupied when I was here. That was the week my mother slipped into an end stage coma on Sunday and my brother and sister and I waited in her room until Tuesday when she quietly passed. We had her viewing and memorial, and of all things I had a poetry reading that week where I read my newest poem dedicated to my mother. It was a lot to take in for just a few days.
And Cookie took it hard. She’d always been my support, but at age 18 all that was a bit much to lay on her; I consulted my veterinarian for questions and Ingrid King for a distance reiki treatment and Cookie and I came out of it pretty well. But after all that she was ready for me to stay home for a while!
Below, I didn’t seem to be getting the point, so Cookie made her point a little more clearly by curling up for a nap. Can’t move Cookie when she’s sleeping! Guess I had to stay home!

After a much needed rest after the Blues played six games in nine nights, the team’s back on the road with tonight’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The team was 5-1 in their starting stretch, so here’s hoping that the extended time off gave them some time to rest but didn’t diminish their momentum any.
The Columbus Blue Jackets, on the other hand, don’t exactly have a lot of momentum right now. They have two wins on the season, and have scored just seven goals over their last five games. The Blues scored one less than that in their opening night game against Detroit. The Jackets knew that not having Rick Nash to rely on for goals anymore was going to hurt the team in the short run until those goals were replaced, but their anemic start so far was probably unforeseen by everyone. The Jackets have a three-way tie for most goals between Mark Letestu, Artem Anisimov, and Vaclav Prospal – they each have two. The Blues also have a tie for leading goal scorer between Chris Stewart and Vladimir Tarasenko. They each have four.
The Blue Jackets also will have to work with what they have in net. Flash-in-the-pan Steve Mason is basically the backup now, which means that Sergei Bobrovsky is the current starter. Bob is a surprisingly able netminder, but it doesn’t matter how well he plays if the team in front of him can’t score to back him up. Brian Elliott will be in net tonight for the Blues. He hasn’t gotten off to the best start this season, leading many to wonder if he’s regressing to the mean. Regardless, he’s still 2-1 for the season, with the one loss coming at Chicago in a game where the team felt that the first period was optional.
You can’t approach any game in the NHL as an easy win; the Blue Jackets won their last game against St. Louis 5-2 at Scottrade, which was one of the hardest arenas for a visitor to play in. They can find ways to win; just because they don’t seem very good doesn’t mean that they can’t take a team down.

Texting is quick, but limited in its expressiveness. Videos are full of human expression, but often not all that timely. The mission of the guys at Glide? To create a “You put your chocolate in my peanut butter!” product, and mix the two media into one, even better, form of communication.
Glide’s developers, on hand this week at Macworld/iWorld, have dubbed their iOS app a “video walkie-talkie.” On the surface, that sounds like a rehash of Apple’s native Facetime offering, but this is different. A Glide user can “broadcast” a short video to a select friend or group of friends—if the recipient is offline, that video will launch on their iPhone within seconds. And if not, it’ll wait in the cloud, to be played later when the user checks messages. (See the video below for a demonstration.) Responses can be offered in nearly real time, but the chat isn't live.
Users can also send text and emoji using the app, but the video is Glide’s core feature. “We’re taking texting and video and giving you the best of both without the limitations of either one,” said Ari Roisman, Glide’s CEO.

The full lineup of XSEED Games titles includes:
KILLER IS DEAD

The player takes control of an executioner named Mondo Zappa who wields a Japanese sword in his right hand and brandishes interchangeable weapons in his left artificial arm. His ultimate goal is to execute various heinous criminals scattered around the world and beyond.
Completely unique visuals and outstanding stylish action come together to deliver an unprecedented gaming experience in KILLER IS DEAD. This brand-new action title is being jointly developed by KADOKAWA GAMES and GRASSHOPPER MANUFACTURE, with SUDA51 lending his trademark sense of style at the helm. Deep Silver, the games label of Koch Media, will bring the title to the countries of Europe and Oceania.
Rune Factory 4
Nintendo 3DS, Summer 2013 – The first game in the Rune Factory simulation/role-playing series to be released on the Nintendo 3DS, Rune Factory 4 adds new romance options, the ability to select a male or female character at the game’s start, and has endless crafting, farming and cooking opportunities. The player becomes Selphia’s prince or princess and can manage the village, explore the countryside with townsfolk, or tame monsters in the wild to aid them in battle or help out in the fields.

Players can select from one of seven races and one of twenty job classes such as Fighter, Mage, Thief, Priest, Akatoki or Archer, while also equipping two sub-jobs. Players can adventure with a party of their own making or brave the wilds alone and seamlessly engage in real-time combat to earn skill points for upgrading and unlocking abilities unique to each job class.
Ys: Memories of Celceta
PS Vita, Fall 2013 – An extensive reimagining of (and pseudo-sequel to) Ys IV, one of the only Ys games never before released in the west, this title puts more enemies on screen than ever before and features the largest, most non-linear overworld in Ys history, boasting superlative graphics and a triumphant evolution of the fast-paced gameplay that has made this series a timeless action RPG mainstay. As the game opens, long-time protagonist Adol Christin finds himself alone, dazed and confused in a strange land, and must piece together his memories of how he got here and why, all the while struggling to determine whom he can trust.
Ys I & II Chronicles+
Windows PC (Steam), February – XSEED Games has delighted RPG fans for years by publishing multiple Ys titles from legendary RPG developer Nihon Falcom for handheld platforms and Windows PC, and now Ys fans can celebrate once more as an enhanced remake of the classic first two games in the Ys franchise comes to Steam for the first time. Including both Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen and Ancient Ys Vanished: The Final Chapter, this action RPG tells of red-haired swordsman Adol Christin’s inaugural adventure to defeat the evil forces blighting the isle of Esteria and uncover the mysteries of the eponymous lost land of Ys.
“This will be an amazing year for us,” said Ken Berry, Executive Vice President of XSEED Games. “Our portfolio continues to expand and it’s evident by this stellar lineup of titles, so we’re excited to share more details and hear what our fans are most looking forward to playing in the coming year.”

Public Domain Mark

DACI is a model is to clarify roles in a decision making process. DACI’s four primary roles make it clear who has approval authority, who needs to be consulted before a decision is made and who needs to be informed once a decision has been made. It is used in Six Sigma projects and in other project management applications and can be used for general business operations as well. DACI is an acronym standing for Driver, Approver, Contributor and Informed.
The same model is also called RACI by some and defined as a reponsibility assignment matrix. According to Wikipedia:
Responsible
Those who do the work to achieve the task. There is a cardinality of at least one role with a participation type of responsible, although others can be delegated to assist in the work. Under DACI the Driver is usually a single person or entity.
Accountable (under the DACI model called “Approver”, is the person or entity who has final approving authority). The one ultimately answerable for the correct and thorough completion of the deliverable or task, and the one who delegates the work to those responsible. In other words, an accountable must sign off (approve) on work that responsible provides. There must be only one accountable specified for each task or deliverable.
Consulted (sometimes counsel)
Those whose opinions or input are sought, typically subject matter experts; and with whom there is two-way communication.
Informed
Those who are kept up-to-date on progress, often only on completion of the task or deliverable; and with whom there is just one-way communication.
While the model is usually done as an informal collaboration, Whispr is a platform that facilitates the process of using DACI or RACI.
Why Whispr?
When just one firewall can create a billion events a day, how can any company analyze the overwhelming amount of data to identify a potential attacker? One thing is certain; while traditional security products remain central to protection, by themselves, they are not nimble enough to keep up with cybercriminals and hackers. By the time those products analyze events, the damage has been done. By one statistic, 85% of the time, hackers only need up to a half hour to get into an organization, either creating damage or stealing. But, the damage isn't usually discovered for weeks and months. In a new addition to the Manti Te’o drama in which he was duped into thinking his long-time, long distance girlfriend was real, Dr. Phil scored the first interview with Ronaiah Tuiasosopo (the guy who was behind the entire charade). And according to Dr. Phil’s analysis, Tuiasosopo was apparently actually in love with Te’o. So it was less like a prank and more like a crush obsession Tuiasosopo had on Te’o. Dr. Phil also asked if Ronaiah was gay, and Ronaiah said when it was phrased like that (meaning that he did have an obsession with Te’o) then he would have to say yes he is. This story just keeps getting more interesting, and sheds light on a possible growing subculture of people occupying false identities on line for things besides financial fraud. It’s a different world now.
And in the NFL, 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver is in hot water. During media day, Culliver made some derogatory homophobic remarks, saying that “the Niners don’t have any gay players and if they do, they gotta get up outta here”. Culliver also said that gay players should stay in the closet. The 49ers organization is furious about his comments, and yesterday Culliver issued a public apology, saying, “The derogatory comments I made yesterday were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel. It has taken me seeing them in print to realize that they are hurtful and ugly. Those discriminating feelings are truly not in my heart. Further, I apologize to those who I have hurt and offended, and I pledge to learn and grow from this experience.” Why can’t certain athletes just perform on the field and keep their mouths shut.
Finally, in the NBA, the Memphis Grizzlies are trying to assemble a championship team over the coming years. However, they thought that one of their star players, Rudy Gay, was expendable. They didn’t want to pay him his hefty contract and decided to ship him out of town. He’s headed for the Toronto Raptors, who will use him as a scoring threat. The Raptors sent back Jose Calderon, Ed Davis, and a 2nd round pick. However, the Grizzlies sent Calderon to Detroit in exchange for long-time Piston Tayshaun Prince and an up-and-comer in Austin Daye. Having Prince will give Memphis a solid defensive player come playoff time. But it will be interesting to see how they structure their team this off-season, because it looks like they will likely be a 2nd round exit in the playoffs.

Prior to the recent round of hands-on previews, it would be fair to say that Splinter Cell: Blacklist had been suffering from a messaging problem with respect to its perceived focus on action at the expense of stealth and a certain infamous torture scene. Some would argue that it’s still an issue for the game, which appears to be garnering, at best, mixed reactions.
Commenting that properly conveying stealth on an E3 stage demonstration would have been tricky, Blacklist producer Andrew Wilson tells Eurogamer “We’ve scaled a lot of that [violence] back, and as we’ve gone through the process of development there are always things that you feel are not working as well. Every game does this, and cuts certain things.”
Returning to the aforementioned torture sequence, an interactive part of the E3 demo in which Sam twists a knife around inside of a man he’s attempting to interrogate, Wilson explains that “Definitely we are not going to see when the game’s coming out that there are torture scenes in it. That scene is not there any more. I’ve not really heard anyone say they loved it…”
I would never say that torture should be avoided as a subject in videogames, but I think that in this particular instance, in this particular game, it’s probably for the best that things worked out the way they did. Could it be used effectively in the medium? Sure. But I didn’t get the sense that torture was necessary here — not based on what we saw of the game.

Every hero has his or her arch-nemesis to battle again and again in a series of ultimate showdowns. While the original Mega Man squared off against Dr. Wily oh so many times, his successor Mega Man X was destined to take down the former leader of the Maverick Hunters following an encounter with Dr. Wily's legacy project that forever changed the future of humanity and robots alike. Today's installment of Artwork on Parade follows the development of the villainous Sigma across his debut game and many sequels, but despite the fact that he returned for another face-off time and again in a variety of dangerous and deadly forms, in the end he was left shattered and damaged beyond repair or redemption. On the other hand, he has a knack for rocking the stylish capes and bulky shoulder pads, so he can't be totally evil. Not with that fashion sense.
Here we have Sigma's original incarnation from Mega Man X. His stylish cape gives him a regal bearing (even if the steel shoulder pads betray something of a 1980s fashion sense). You can even catch a glimpse of his trusty lightsaber peeking from behind the cape. Of all of Sigma's redesigns (and there have been many), this look still remains my absolute favorite. It tells you everything that you need to know about the character at a glance and is much more memorable than anything that followed.
Sigma sported knuckle claws in his debut outing for some Wolverine action, but they're on full display here in this design from Mega Man X2. Sigma's physical forms tend to grow in size from one game to the next as he seeks out better battle bodies, and frankly I've always felt that the designs become much too complicated to properly appreciate. Sigma's look becomes just downright busy in later games and we can see the beginning of that trend here with the extra emphasis on his feet, legs, and shoulders. The proportions seem off to me, but since Sigma is a robot Reploid, I suppose his actual shape is entirely up for grabs. The sigma symbol as a belt buckle of sorts is a nice touch though.
Sigma's return in Mega Man X3 tosses the cape in favor of a series of spider-like legs mounted to his back. The sharp claws have been replaced with spiked wristbands from his original design to match the spiked belt. His feet are still crazily oversized compared to the rest of his body, but at least the shoulder pads remain in spirit. Curiously, his chin seems to be evolving into a shape not seen since Jay Leno became famous.
Sigma isn't one to reuse a physical form if he can help it, and his appearance in Mega Man X4 is meant to invoke imagery associated with the classic Grim Reaper figure. Note the cape (shredded this time to represent Sigma's many defeats) and the energy scythe weapon. Purple and yellow are the themes here, his feet are still huge, and those shoulder pads are larger than ever. His head almost gets lost in all of the visual busyness happening here.
This is Sigma at his most simplistic from Mega Man X5. Clad in black and white with more realistic proportions, I might almost expect him to be a regular playable character in this incarnation. There's not much to him here. The purple streaks represent a cast-off cape and shoulder pad accessory, and his muscular build makes him look almost human.
Sigma was on his way out by the time Mega Man X6 debuted, and while he would continue to play a part in the upcoming sequels, his role was diminished. Here he shows up as a broken wreck bent on revenge (as noted by the tattered cape) almost as an afterthought. He has no flashy weapons to show off in his artwork this time. He's broken and beaten, but just as mad as ever.
Capcom did not produce any official character promotional art of Sigma for Mega Man X7, but Sigma's place in Mega Man X8 features him manipulating events from behind the scenes once again, and this partial look his latest form combines several elements from his previous forms. Take notice of the lightsaber hanging from his waist, for instance, as well as the clashing green, red, and purple colors that make up this design. The shoulder pads are integrated into his shoulders this time, and the high collar gives the impression that his seemingly indestructible head had just been bolted to the body. Are you ready for the surprising reveal? This isn't the real Sigma. It's actually a Reploid using a copy chip to impersonate him. No wonder the design draws from previous Sigma concepts.
Sigma's final form in the main X timeline throws away just about every familiar aspect of his design. Mega Man X8's take on the real character adds horns, does away with the shoulder pads, and looks completely different than anything that's come before. Only the general head shape is the same, as is the crystal embedded in Sigma's forehead (though it is green now instead of red).
While ultimately canceled, this was to be Sigma's appearance in Rockman Online. It's a return to a classic look and an updated concept on the one appearance that works best for the character. The cape and shoulder pads are in full effect as are the spiked wristbands. This may well be the definitive Sigma design. Such a shame it did not have an opportunity to be properly showcased. Sigma has changed so much over the years into so many bizarre and outlandish forms that seeing him depicted in his classic incarnation feels refreshing. It's as if this is the way he's meant to be. It's certainly how I'll remember him.
