Sony Online Entertainment and Major League Gaming have announced a partnership that has Planetside 2 coming to the MLG competitive circuit. This is a year-long collaboration that will bring Planetside 2 into all of MLG’s properties including original broadcast programming, online competition and presence at MLG events.
How exactly the large open-world PvP gameplay of Planetside 2 will translate into an e-sport that is both interesting and engaging for audiences we do no yet know. A statement from the official announcement seems to imply that there are some new game modes being developed.
“Over the next few months, the PlanetSide 2 and MLG teams will work closely to develop ideal competitive gameplay features and settings to showcase the massively multiplayer online first-person shooter (MMOFPS). With MLG’s consult and significant community involvement, SOE has committed to creating a long-term eSports initiative within PlanetSide 2 that will highlight an exceptional massively multiplayer competitive gaming experience.”
No one is giving details right now about what the plans are for presenting Planetside 2 as an e-sport, but from the statement above it looks as if new maps and battleground type gameplay could be in the works. Could we see 3v3 or 5v5 teams competing against each other in short term objective based competition? There’s always the grand ‘ol who can kill the most people in a specific amount of time scenario, but somehow I doubt that would be compelling to watch as a long-term e-sports format. Whatever they have planned, one wouldn’t think that they are going to try and produce a competitive e-sports scene out of the huge open PvP world that is Planetside 2. There is simply too much happening over too large of a space, and there isn’t any sort of goal to achieve that makes it really feel as if a team has won an e-sports match. The current PS2 game is designed specifically to never end, and therefore keep players coming back in an ebb and flow of capturing areas then taking them back.
This is definitely going to be interesting to watch as it develops. Will Planetside 2 coming to MLG open the door for other similar games like Tribes or Firefall? Will they be able to develop a game format that audiences care for while still maintaining the core feel of what Planetside 2 is?
Sound off in the comments section below. What game format would you like to watch for Planetside 2? Do you think a small battleground type map would still feel like PS2?
