Thom: A Portrait of Modern Youth in Australia

old tv 1 Thom: A Portrait of Modern Youth in Australia

‘Success is striking a balance between art and commerce’. This is the line that starts Riley Blakeway’s debut film, Thom: A Portrait of Modern Youth, a fitting line considering the subject matter. Thom is a teenager from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, who works as a concreter and enjoys surfing and skateboarding. For Thom (and so many other young Australians), work is a means to an end – a place that is hated but provides money. Blakeway provides a real look into the underlying ideology and attitude of Thom; a dark and futile view at times.
