While all this PlayStation 4 business is highly speculative and still suspect to fallacy, no matter what the source, it’s hard not to get excited that Sony are teasing something big for February 20th and that information keeps coming to light in different places, all of it very plausible, even if unproven.
Development sources, writes EDGE, with working knowledge of both upcoming platforms say that Sony is set to reveal the PlayStation 4 through the even on the 20th, calling the even See The Future. With the event, Sony will unveil the following:
A Redesigned Controller
The new controller looks similar to the current DualShock 3 PlayStation 3 controller, but features a touchpad in the middle, replacing the PlayStation button and both the Start and Select inputs. The technology is based on the Vita’s rear touchpad and is “similarly responsive in use.”
A new “Share” button on the controller will allow players to capture and share screenshots and video. The console itself will capture the most recent fifteen minutes of video without processing penalty (so is claimed) which can be edited locally and uploaded via the internet for sharing purposes.
Launch Window
The new console will launch in North America and Japan before the end of the year, likely by Christmastime, and will see European territories in early 2014. Alongside, a new version of the PlayStation Eye will make its way to shelves and will be PlayStation Move compatible.
Hardware
Apparently, the leaked specifications of the new console are pretty accurate. With a more PC-like build being implemented, development for the platform will be a lot smoother, unlike the esoteric infrastructure that the PlayStation 3 sported.
The platform will use Sony’s GDDR5 RAM, capable of moving data at 176 gigabytes per second and is looking to push the console to contain a total of 8 GB of RAM to match Microsoft’s upcoming console.
Both platforms will use eight-core AMD CPUs clocked at 1.6 GHz with Microsoft opting for a D3D11.x GPU from an unknown source and Sony utilizing AMD’s ‘R10XX’.
A source working with both consoles has said that Sony’s upcoming platform is “slightly more powerful” and “very simple to work with”.
