25 Years On: Live Aid

On July 13 1985, a historic pop concert was held at Wembley Stadium in London. “Live Aid”, the brainchild of Bob Geldof, followed on from the Christmas 1984 “Band Aid” single and ultimately raised around £40 million for famine relief in Africa. In conjunction with a concert held in Philadelphia, the events featured almost every major pop star of the time, with iconic performances from Phil Collins, the Police and Queen. Geldof received an honorary knighthood in 1986 for his tireless charity work and public awareness campaigning.

Geldof later resurrected the idea to produce “Live 8″, a July 2005 concert to raise awareness once more about the horrific conditions in Africa; in monetary terms this was even more successful, leading to a pledge from the G8 nations to provide of the order of $50 BILLION in aid.

Now 25 years down the line, we salute Sir Bob and his achievements.
